I want to start off by apologizing to my mom, as she thought this blog was going to be about spring cleaning. There is just one thing I can’t get my mind off of these days, and that is NCAA March Madness. If you are aware of the competitive nature of the Fleming Family, you might have noticed our March Madness plaque that hangs by the stair case. Every year each member of our family fills out a bracket in an attempt to get his/her name on the plaque because we all strive for immortality. While I do have the most wins under my belt, Virginia quickly shattered my dreams this year, along with many others in my family who had picked them to go all the way. Through all of the competitive banter and unending group texts between our family, there is one thing that can bring us together during the madness, and that is the Texas Tech Basketball team.
For the first time in thirteen years Texas Tech will play in the sweet sixteen of the NCAA tournament. While Senior Keenan Evans was the top scorer with 22 points against the Florida Gators, the young talented freshmen Zhaire Smith and Jarrett Culver spark excitement for the years to come. Zhaire Smith made headlines of his own when he threw down a 360 alley-oop dunk during their win over Stephen F. Austin.
Texas Tech’s next game will be Friday March 23, in Boston’s TD Garden against Purdue. While Red Raiders turned the American Airlines center into their own brand of Lubbock for the win over Florida, the Boston Garden is quite the distance from Raider Nation. Coach Beard himself recently recognized the endless support of the Red Raider fans.
I hope to hear the Raider Power chant take over the Boston Garden and resonate through the nationally televised event. Tune in this Friday at 8:57PM CST on TBS to support our Red Raiders in the Sweet Sixteen as they take on Purdue.
